LinkedIn Headline — 5 Tips on How to Stand Out From the Crowd

I’ll give you five tips on how to improve your LinkedIn headline in order to stand out from the crowd, stay with me.

Before getting to the tips, let’s understand why it’s important to have a good LinkedIn headline.

If you are appearing in searches, or if you have viewed your prospect’s profile and they are seeing who has viewed their profile, people will see only two things:

- Profile Picture

- Headline

That’s why it’s crucial to have a really good LinkedIn headline. So let’s get started and get to the tips.

Customize your headline. By default, LinkedIn will place whatever your current position is. Let’s say CEO X, Y, Z. We definitely want to customize this and type something else.

I know you’re going to say I have 120 characters to describe my headline and that’s true, but my point is: 46 characters is the safe character count that will be shown regardless of the device and whether it is on viewer’s search result, suggested people or other.

So, make sure your main keywords or the main message is placed in the beginning of your message. The remaining part can be after the 46 characters.

Use either keywords, your value proposition or your mission statement in your headline.

Examples of keywords in my case can be B2B lead generation, email marketing, LinkedIn coaching, etc. The bottom line is — whatever you want to be found for — you should have it in your headline.

In the case of value proposition in my case it could be “helping businesses generate organic leads on LinkedIn.” Combination of two is a good one, but make sure, again, you place the most important part of your headline text in the beginning.

By saying generic I mean, let’s say digital marketing expert or graphic designer. Try to add some sort of flavor to it. E.g., digital marketing expert specializing in X, Y, Z. Got my point?

Let me explain what I mean by examples: Seeking new opportunities.

This could be a controversial opinion, but from my experience, and from what I have discussed with many LinkedIn coaches, by saying seeking new opportunities you are not really increasing your chances of getting hired, because if someone wants to head hunt you, they will still do it regardless of that very message.

Instead try to showcase what value can you bring to the table for the companies in your domain.

An example of a salesy and cheesy one could be when people are writing their phone numbers or their emails in their headlines. I don’t believe this is working. So I would recommend not doing that.

Let me know which tip you liked most and what would be your suggestion for tip number six?
